We have lived here 5 years now (owned the place for 8) and have more or less neglected the basement the entire time. We gave it a coat of white paint and new carpet when we moved in, but not done anything with the terrible layout of the center space, or even finished repairing the drywall that needed to be taken out for new plumbing upstairs.
The time finally came to turn it into livable space, and we found a great contractor to do the job.
